Restoring your network store
When to perform a restore
There are several situations where you should to restore your network store from a backup:
• if you try to rebuild your Directory and the rebuild fails
• if the hard drive has failed
• if you are moving your network store to a new drive.
Performing a restore from a backup
To restore your network store from a backup, follow these steps.
1 Make sure the server is shut down.
2 Copy the following folders from your backup medium to your hard drive, replacing the existing damaged versions:
• the folder containing the server
• the folder containing the network store on the master volume (the volume on which you installed the server)
• the folder containing the network store on any other volumes you have approved.
Restoring selected content from a backup server
If your live content has been deleted or somehow corrupted, you can retrieve the content from a backup and restore it to the live server.
To do this, you will first need to restore your entire network store to a backup server as described above. Then:
1 Start the server on your backup (restored) server. It is not necessary to start Internet Services.
2 Log in as administrator.
3 Determine the location of the community you wish to restore data from.
Note
All communities will reside on the Desktops of one of your users. There is no need to find the original community. You just need to determine the location of an alias of the community.
4 Start a new message in the Mailbox and address it to "batch admin" (no quotes).
5 Type the following command into the body of the message:
REPLY
EXPORT Desktop userid "Community Name" +ep
where
userid is the userID of the user whose Desktop the community resides on
Community Name is the name of the community containing the content you wish to restore.
For example, if a community named "Marketing Relations" is on user jsmith's Desktop, then you can retrieve all content from that community with the command:
REPLY
EXPORT Desktop jsmith "Marketing Relations" +ep
Note
It is not practical to retrieve just a single item from a community so the above command will retrieve all of the content within the community. When restoring, you will delete all of the existing content on the live server and replace it with the restored content.
6 Send the message.
You will receive two replies back from the server. The first reply will indicate whether there were any errors in your script and the second reply will contain all the content as attachments, and a restore script as the body.
7 Save all attachments to a folder on your local computer and save the body as a text file for retrieval in the restore process.
You can now shut down your restored server.
8 Log into your live server as the administrator and open the Desktop of one of the users who has the corrupte community on his home page.
9 While holding <Ctrl> and <Shift> on your keyboard, double-click the community to open it.
10 Delete all content that was in the backup community, leaving only new content that was submitted after the backup was taken.
11 Close the community.
12 Start a new message in the Mailbox and address it to "batch admin" (no quotes).
13 Copy the script from your saved text file and paste it into the body of the message.
14 Add the word REPLY to the first line of the message (on its own line).
15 Change the line that starts with "SetBase... <ObjDesc>..." and replace <ObjDesc> with the path to the community.
In the example above, the new line would be:
Setbase Desktop jsmith "Marketing Relations"
16 Send the message.
Your content will be automatically restored.
