Shutting down and restarting the server

You can shut down Open Text Social Workplace from:
  • the console
  • the administrator's account.

When to restart your server
The server requires a restart when performing the following tasks:
•       when installing new Open Text Social Workplace component executables
•       when performing a full restore of the Fnetwork store
•       after a very large number of folder creates (for example, adding 5000 new users). With faster processors and more robust systems this should not be an issue.

Shutting down Open Text Social Workplace components from their consoles
When you run the Open Text Social Workplace components as applications, you can stop them using their console screens. Stop the components in the reverse order they were started.
You should close each component in the reverse order to what you started.

To shut down
Do this
Application Services
press Ctrl-C or close the application window
Internet Services
press Ctrl-C when Internet Service console is the active window
the server
press Ctrl-C when the server console is the active window

Shutting down the server from the administrator account
Because you aren't always near the consoles, you can use your administrator account on the FirstClass client to shut down the server. This doesn't shut down Internet Services or Application Services, but since the server is shut down, Open Text Social Workplace is essentially down.
When you shut down the server from the administrator's account, you have the following choices:
  • fast shutdown
  • polite shutdown
  • restart.
Fast shutdown
Fast shutdown logs off all users immediately without warning and shuts down the server.
To initiate a fast shutdown, do one of the following:
  • Choose Admin > Control > Fast Shutdown.
  • Open the Server Control form on the Core Services folder, then click Fast Shutdown on the Server tab.
Polite shutdown
Sends a broadcast message to all users instructing them to log off because the server will be shut down.
This doesn't actually log users off or shut down the server. After you issue this message and give users some time to log out, you will need to either disconnect all users or do a fast shutdown.
To initiate a polite shutdown, do one of the following:
  • Choose Admin > Control > Polite Shutdown.
  • Open the Server Control form in Core Services folder, then click Polite Shutdown on the Server tab.
Restart
Initiates a fast shutdown followed by a restart of the computer. The Open Text Social Workplace server is not restarted automatically.
To shut down the server and restart the computer, choose Admin > Control > Restart.

Starting the server
To start the server, you must start the following three components, in this order:
• the server (this component is called fcs64.exe)
• Internet Services (this component is called fcintsrv64.exe)
• Application Services (this component is called fcas64.exe).
As each is started, a console screen is displayed.
