Running audits

About audits
A system audit performs the following important functions for your Open Text Social Workplace server:
  • removes deleted items (after the expiry period has been reached)
  • removes expired items
  • deletes expired user accounts
  • performs automatic updates
  • performs repairs to your network store
  • writes the index to disk
  • generates log files and statistics on system activity that can be used to troubleshoot system errors.
Audits run automatically on a schedule you set up, and can also be run on demand.

Audits perform repairs to your system. Never disable them.
The amount of time audit takes to run depends on the size and complexity of your network store and whether you run a full audit (on the whole system) or a single audit (on an individual user or object). It can range from hours for a large network store to a few minutes for a small one, or as little as a few seconds for a user. To find out how long audit takes on your system, check the console messages or server log files.
When you start your server, the console will display a message stating the time the next audit is scheduled to start. If the server hasn't been started in the last 24 hours, audit will automatically start the next time the server is started.
When the audit ends, the console will display the date and time the next automatic audit is scheduled to start.
The server can deliver messages during audit, but audit can't be performed on items in use.
While audit is running, you can stop it by clicking Stop Audit on the Server Control form in the Core Services folder. Audit will resume at the user it was auditing the next time it starts.

Scheduling automatic full audits
By default, the Open Text Social Workplace server is set to perform an automatic full audit once a day.
Because a full audit may slow down your server, you should try to schedule automatic full audits for off-peak times when there are usually few users online. By default, the automatic full audit runs daily at 3:00 AM.
To change the scheduled time:
1       Choose Admin > System Profile.
2       Change the times at Audit schedule on the Timers tab.
What happens when you specify both a start and end time
If you specify both a start and end time for automatic full audit, the console will display the scheduled audit end time when the audit begins.
If you change the end time while an audit is running, the change will not take effect until the next time the audit starts.
If an audit is stopped and then force started during the run-time window, it will stop at the scheduled end time. If it is force started outside the run-time window, it will run until the scheduled end time or to completion, if that comes first.
If an audit finishes before the scheduled end time, it will stop and not run again until the next scheduled start time. It will never loop back to the beginning of the network store.
If an audit doens't complete before the end time, it will stop exactly where it is at the end time. The next time the audit runs it will start at the same user who was being audited when the audit was stopped.
If your server isn't running when audit is scheduled to start and is started again before the specified end time, audit will run when the server starts, and will end at the specified end time.
If an audit begins but the server is shut down while the audit is running (or the audit is stopped), the audit will not resume automatically. An audit will only start once during the run-time window.
What happens when you specify a start time only
If you specify a start time only, audit will run to completion.
Because the default run-time window is 24 hours, if your server isn't running when the audit is scheduled to start, audit will run to completion when the server starts, unless you stop it.
If an audit starts and is manually stopped (the server is shut down or you stop the audit), it won't resume again automatically in that 24-hour window. Audit will only run automatically once during the 24-hour run-time window.

Running a manual full audit
If you run out of disk space, you must delete unnecessary files. The disk space released as a result of these deletions isn't available until audit runs.
To force a full audit to run immediately, choose Admin > Control > Audit or click Force Audit on the Server Control form in the Core Services folder.
Because server performance is decreased during audit, you should only force a manual full audit when necessary. Whenever possible, wait for the next automatic full audit, or run a single audit on specific users or items.
