Installing and configuring Archive Services

Installing Archive Services
Install Archive Services on a separate machine from the host server. The minimum requirements for each scenario are listed in the Release notes, but, keep in mind, the actual performance of your system will vary depending on how powerful your hardware is and on how busy your system gets.

While it may be possible to run the FirstClass Archive Server on the same computer as the FirstClass Core Server, this configuration is neither tested nor supported, and we strongly recommend against it.
To install Archive Services, run the installer on the appropriate machine and follow the instructions.
The installer will create an archive store on the hard drive.

Configuring Archive Services
Once Archive Services is installed, you will need to:
• create a gateway to it from your host server
• log into Archive Services
• enable archiving on the host server
• test the gateway.
Creating a gateway
You will need to create a gateway to the Archive Server on FirstClass. Open FC Update Service and select the Archive Services update, then click Apply Update.
Archive Services automatically configures the domain name of the host so that its gateway can connect to the host on demand. This domain is taken from the host's System Profile field. Make sure this is filled in and correct for this feature to work.
Leave the password field blank. FirstClass will automatically generate a secure password and update both the Archive Server and the host server when it connects for the first time.
Archive Services also configures the server serial number automatically. If you need to change this, the valid range is between 800000000 and 800000099.
When Archive Services connects to the host server for the first time, it automatically registers the server, sets the password, logs in, and begins archiving messages. By default, it is set to connect on demand when 50 private messages are queued. You can keep it like this, or assign a different schedule.
Archive Services starts with the following settings:
• licensing is set to five user sessions and one Librarian.
Logging into Archive Services (the Librarian account)
The librarian account is used to access user archives and restore files. It is a regular user account with some additional privileges:
• it can see BCC recipients on archived messages
• it can access the Reports and Core Services containers
• it has a custom toolbar and admin menu.
The librarian account has access to everything you need to manage Archive Services. You can
• access the Session Monitor and System Profile
• use the List Directory to view user archives and conference archives
• use the Admin > Control menu to shut down Archive Services.
Log into Archive Services using the default username and password "librarian" (no quotes). Change the password immediately.

The last modified date of messages in the archive is set to the time the message was delivered on the main server. Expiry periods on messages are disabled, and replaced with the retention period.
Enabling Archive Services for users
To enable archiving of messages, group calendar events, and personal chat transcripts for a set of users:
1       Decide which group(s) of users should be archived.
2       Open the respective Group form on the host server.
3       Click the Services tab.
4       Select the Archive Mail checkbox.
5       Indicate a retention period (for example, "260 weeks" (no quotes), which is the equivalent of five years).
6  Select the Archive group calendar events checkbox if desired.

Repeat this procedure (starting at step 2) for each group who will have archive privileges.
To enable archiving of (published) conferences:
1  Create a Container Template with the Archive containers field selected.

2       Indicate a retention period (for example, "260 weeks" (no quotes), which is the equivalent of five years).
3  Place the conferences to be archived in this group.
During the next synchronization, Archive Services will create a conference on the Archive Server and archive subsequent messages posted to the conference.
Testing the gateway
To make sure the gateway is configured correctly:
1       Choose a couple of users with archiving enabled and send them some test messages.
2       Open the gateway form and click Connect on Close.
This will start the gateway immediately without waiting for a set number of messages to be queued.
3       Log into the Librarian account on the Archive Server and verify that the messages were archived in the correct accounts.
